What you'll study

You'll study the core principles of engineering design and problem-solving, starting with foundational mathematics, mechanics and materials science. Year 1 introduces CAD and workshop practice alongside the engineering design process. In Year 2, you'll move into your chosen specialism, such as Mechanical, Electrical & Electronic, Civil & Structural, Robotics & Mechatronics, or Energy & Sustainability, while developing engineering analysis and computing skills. You'll undertake a team design project against a real specification. Year 3 focuses on specialist options, professional engineering practice (covering safety, ethics and sustainability), and culminates in a substantial individual design or research project that forms the centrepiece of your degree.

You're drawn to the physical world and curious about how things are made and used. You enjoy solving problems creatively, thinking about user experience, and understanding why products succeed or fail in the marketplace. You're comfortable with both visual and technical thinking, sketching ideas, but also grasping engineering constraints and manufacturing processes. This course suits you if you want to move beyond pure art or pure engineering into a practical discipline where design decisions have immediate, tangible consequences. You'll find the blend of theory, research and making absorbing, and you'll appreciate having scope to specialise within the degree.
