Course in depth

What this course covers, who it suits and where it leads.

What you'll study

You'll study the engineering science and design methods that underpin modern medical devices and health technologies. A course like this typically begins with foundational engineering mathematics, mechanics and materials, and practical design skills using CAD and workshop practice. In Year 2, you'll move into specialist areas, thermodynamics, fluids, circuits and systems, alongside engineering analysis, computing and simulation, often working in teams on real-world design projects. From Year 3 onwards, you'll choose specialisations such as mechanical, electrical and electronic, civil and structural, robotics and mechatronics, energy and sustainability, or pursue a Chartered (CEng) pathway. You'll also study professional engineering practice covering safety, ethics and sustainability, culminating in a substantial individual design or research project that forms the degree's centrepiece.

Who it's for

You're drawn to engineering but want to apply it to human health, solving real problems in hospitals, clinics and research labs rather than abstract scenarios. You think systematically about how things work, enjoy practical project work, and have the perseverance for a five-year programme that won't repeat what you've learned at A-level. You'll thrive if you're comfortable with mathematics and physics, curious about medical science, and motivated by the idea that your work directly improves people's lives. The course suits people who want depth: you won't skim a range of engineering disciplines, but will develop serious expertise in one where healthcare is the context.

Careers & job market

Across UK Engineering courses nationally, 90% of graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating. Of those working, 80% are in highly skilled roles or pursuing further qualifications. National Graduate Outcomes data shows medical engineering graduates earn a starting salary range of £29,000 to £35,000 fifteen months after graduation, rising to £33,150–£46,800 within five years. Careers span medical device design, biomedical research, hospital engineering, regulatory affairs, and healthcare technology development. The integrated master's gives you the technical credibility to step into graduate schemes or specialist roles immediately.

International students

What applying to Cardiff University from outside the UK involves: fees, English, visa, funding and living costs.

Tuition fees

International tuition is set per course by Cardiff University; international fees are typically £12,000–£30,000/year for classroom subjects and higher for lab/clinical ones. You’re not eligible for UK Tuition Fee or Maintenance Loans, so plan for fees plus living costs upfront.

English language

Most UK undergraduate courses ask for around IELTS 6.0–6.5 (no band below 5.5–6.0), or an accepted equivalent. If you’re just short, most universities run a pre-sessional English course that counts towards the requirement.

Student visa

You’ll usually need a Student visa (Student Route). After you accept an offer the university issues a CAS; you then show funds for fees plus about £1,023–£1,334/month living costs and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge for NHS access.

Scholarships & funding

Many universities offer international/global scholarships (often £2,000–£6,000/yr), check Cardiff University’s funding pages.

Living costs

Budget roughly £1,100–£1,400/month outside London and £1,400–£1,800/month in London for rent, food and travel; the figure also matters for your visa.

Working while you study

A Student visa usually allows up to 20 hours/week in term time and full-time in holidays, useful alongside study, though not something to rely on for fees.

Visa rules and fees change. Always confirm the current requirements with Cardiff University and gov.uk before you apply.

Common questions

Entry is competitive. Accepted students typically held strong UCAS tariffs. The most common tariff band among recent entrants was 144 - 159 UCAS points. Use the calculator on this page to see where your predicted grades would put you; many universities also make lower contextual offers.
