What you'll study

A typical civil engineering degree moves from scientific foundations through practical design and analysis, culminating in specialist study and a major project. You'll usually begin with engineering mathematics, mechanics and materials science, alongside CAD and workshop skills. In your second year, you'll progress to core discipline modules, such as structural analysis, hydraulics and geotechnical engineering, combined with engineering computing and a team design project. From year three onwards, you'll select from specialisations such as civil and structural engineering, energy and sustainability, mechanical systems, electrical and electronic engineering, robotics and mechatronics, or pursue the Chartered (CEng) pathway. Throughout, you'll develop professional engineering practice, safety, ethics and project management, and culminate in a substantial individual design or research project that forms the degree's centrepiece.
