This module aims to introduce you to routine primary care in preparation for the clinical environment. You'll learn about preventive methods and simple restorations in a simulated environment. You'll complete placements in Dental Education Centres, where you'll perform dental procedures, develop sound clinical judgement, and apply evidence-based approaches to care. You'll gain a thorough understanding of disease prevention. You'll also develop professional and communication skills within the dental team and with external healthcare professionals.
You'll continue to build upon your skill, knowledge and confidence. You'll learn about more complex patient needs and treatments, supported by secondary care placements in paediatrics, orthodontics, maxillo-facial surgery and special care dentistry. This includes the treatment planning and care of patients requiring periodontics, indirect restorations, occlusion, minor oral surgery, and more advanced prosthodontics. You'll also learn about dental treatment under sedation and general anaesthetic
You will critically evaluate dental literature and professional responsibilities. You'll consolidate your clinical knowledge to provide holistic patient care. This includes applying advanced dentistry within integrated treatment plans. You'll also work effectively in multidisciplinary dental teams.

This course is distinctive in embedding you in primary care from Year 1 onwards, giving you real-world clinical experience early to prepare you for your foundation year. A typical dental degree progresses from biomedical foundations through to specialist clinical practice. You'll usually begin with core anatomy, physiology and pathology, alongside clinical and communication skills developed with patients from the start. Years 1–2 also introduce population health and ethics. From Year 3 onwards, you'll undertake clinical rotations and specialty attachments across areas such as clinical placements, surgery, general practice and psychiatry. You may pursue intercalation into research if interested. Your final year includes assistantship in clinical practice, an elective placement, and integrated assessment leading to professional registration.
