What you'll study
This degree develops a broad foundation in physics before progressing to specialist topics and independent research. Year 1 covers core physics (mechanics, matter and energy), mathematics for scientists, and laboratory fundamentals. Year 2 deepens your understanding of quantum and thermal physics, introduces advanced experimental techniques and scientific computing, and builds the mathematical tools for real physical problems. Year 3 offers specialisations such as astrophysics, materials science, quantum science, computational methods and medicinal chemistry, alongside research-level seminars taught by active researchers. You'll complete a supervised research project in your final year, putting your skills into practice within a research group.
