The course is structured to take you from foundational understanding through to independent research. Early on, you'll build core theory in environmental science, establishing the scientific grounding needed to make sense of environmental change as both a physical and a social phenomenon. Alongside this, you'll develop skills in research & methods, the practical and analytical tools environmental scientists use to collect, interpret and communicate evidence. As you progress, the emphasis shifts towards applied practice, where you start applying what you've learned to real environmental questions, and towards specialist options, which let you shape the degree around particular interests, such as the legal and policy dimensions of environmental change, or oceanographic approaches to studying marine and coastal systems. A significant part of the later stages is an independent project, giving you the chance to design and carry out a substantial piece of research on a topic of your own choosing. Running throughout is a strand of professional skills, intended to prepare you for the kinds of tasks and communication expected in environmental careers, not just academic study.
