Course in depth

What this course covers, who it suits and where it leads.

What you'll study

A Computing degree builds progressively from programming and hardware fundamentals through to specialist options and a final project. You'll usually start with imperative and object-oriented programming (typically Python and Java), computer systems and architecture, and discrete mathematics for algorithms and logic. In Year 2, a course like this normally moves to algorithms and data structures, databases and software engineering, and artificial intelligence and machine learning foundations. By Year 3, you'll choose specialist options such as cybersecurity, data science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, systems and networks, or human-computer interaction, whilst also completing security and networks study and a substantial individual project that brings together design, implementation and evaluation.

Who it's for

This course suits students with A-levels or equivalent qualifications; around half of recent entrants held these credentials. It's designed for those seeking a computing degree with flexibility across multiple campus locations in Scotland, particularly valuable if you're based in rural or island communities where university access might otherwise be limited.

Careers & job market

Nationally, 85% of Computer Science graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating. Of those working, 75% are in highly skilled roles or pursuing further study. Graduate earnings across the field start at £25,000–£35,000 at 15 months post-graduation, rising to £29,750–£42,000 after five years.

University & format

This BSc (Hons) Computing is delivered full-time over 4 years by the University of the Highlands and Islands, a UK degree-awarding body. Teaching is provided across multiple UHI partner colleges: Argyll, Inverness, Moray, North West Hebrides, Orkney, Perth and Shetland. The course is taught in English. How AI is changing the work

AI doesn't replace the profession, it shifts it: routine tasks get automated, while judgement, working with people and using AI well become more valuable.

What AI takes off your plate

  • Boilerplate and scaffolding code
  • First-pass tests and docs
  • Routine debugging and refactors
  • Standard data wrangling

More human than ever

  • System design and architecture trade-offs
  • Reviewing and owning correctness & security
  • Translating fuzzy problems into software
  • Leading delivery and mentoring

The strongest graduates pair subject depth with the ability to use AI tools critically.
