Course in depth

What this course covers, who it suits and where it leads.

What you'll study

This joint honours degree allows you to pursue interests in both geography and sport science. You'll usually begin with foundations in anatomy, exercise physiology, and sport psychology, alongside practical coaching and skills sessions. In your second year, you'll move into biomechanics, physiology of training, and research methods. By year three, you'll choose specialist areas, such as strength and conditioning, nutrition, rehabilitation, coaching, or PE teaching routes, and complete an applied placement and independent dissertation. The course integrates theoretical understanding of how bodies move and adapt with practical experience in real sporting and geographical contexts.

Who it's for

You're drawn to understanding both the natural world and human movement and performance. You're curious about how geography and sport intersect, whether that's environmental impacts on athletes, landscape use, climate effects on sporting communities, or the built environments where sport happens. You work well with concepts, data and practical investigation. You want substantial depth in two subjects without abandoning either. Expect to develop research capability, analytical thinking, and the ability to communicate findings across both fields. This suits independent learners who thrive when given scope to specialise within a structured framework.

Careers & job market

Across Sport & Exercise Science courses nationally, 90% of graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduating. Among those working, 62% are in highly skilled roles or pursuing further study. National earnings data shows: starting (at 15 months) typically fall between £22,000 and £30,000; after three years, £19,125–£27,000; and after five years, £23,375–£33,000. These figures reflect the broader labour market rather than university-specific outcomes. Graduates move into roles spanning coaching, sports management, environmental consultancy, public health, research, and allied professions where combined expertise in geography and sport science creates distinct opportunities.

International students

What applying to Loughborough University from outside the UK involves: fees, English, visa, funding and living costs.

Tuition fees

International tuition is set per course by Loughborough University; international fees are typically £12,000–£30,000/year for classroom subjects and higher for lab/clinical ones. You’re not eligible for UK Tuition Fee or Maintenance Loans, so plan for fees plus living costs upfront.

English language

Most UK undergraduate courses ask for around IELTS 6.0–6.5 (no band below 5.5–6.0), or an accepted equivalent. If you’re just short, most universities run a pre-sessional English course that counts towards the requirement.

Student visa

You’ll usually need a Student visa (Student Route). After you accept an offer the university issues a CAS; you then show funds for fees plus about £1,023–£1,334/month living costs and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge for NHS access.

Scholarships & funding

Many universities offer international/global scholarships (often £2,000–£6,000/yr), check Loughborough University’s funding pages.

Living costs

Budget roughly £1,100–£1,400/month outside London and £1,400–£1,800/month in London for rent, food and travel; the figure also matters for your visa.

Working while you study

A Student visa usually allows up to 20 hours/week in term time and full-time in holidays, useful alongside study, though not something to rely on for fees.

Visa rules and fees change. Always confirm the current requirements with Loughborough University and gov.uk before you apply.

Common questions

Entry is competitive. Accepted students typically held strong UCAS tariffs. The most common tariff band among recent entrants was 144 - 159 UCAS points. Use the calculator on this page to see where your predicted grades would put you; many universities also make lower contextual offers.
