Carl Rogers proposed the concepts of the self, congruence, and conditions of worth and used them in client-centred therapy.
Our self-concept, self-knowledge, self-esteem, and social self define our self-perception, Katarina Gadže, StudySmarter Originals
Carl Rogers proposed that a person’s self-concept consists of three parts: our self-image, our ideal self, and our self-esteem.
Our self-image is the way we perceive ourselves, how we think, feel, look, and act. Our experiences can shape our self-image.
The ideal self is the person we would like to be. It is the ideal image we have of ourselves.
Self-esteem is a subjective assessment of our self-worth.
Self-concept is what we think about ourselves. Therefore, our self-esteem can be positive or negative depending on how we feel about ourselves.
Congruence is a term used by Carl Rogers to describe when a person’s self-image matches their ideal self. However, Rogers believed that a person rarely achieves complete congruence and that everyone has some degree of incongruence.
Incongruence occurs when there is a discrepancy between our self-image and our ideal self.Roger’s premise is that all people have an innate drive to grow, develop and reach their full potential. To achieve this, we must be in a state of congruence.
Conditions of worth develop when we accept other people’s rules or opinions about how we should be. Conditions of worth are something that parents can impose on their children. Children must behave in a certain way or meet conditions for their parents to love and accept them. Children grow up believing that they must behave in a certain way to receive people’s love and acceptance. When we receive conditional positive regard, we develop conditions of worth.
Conditions of worth are rules of behaviour that a person believes they must follow to be loved and accepted.
A child may grow up with an ‘ideal self’ shaped by values. This ‘ideal self’ is not what they are or want to be, leading to psychological problems.
A child believes that he must get good grades to receive their parents’ love. A boy thinks he must not show weakness or his father would disapprove and not accept him.
Unconditional positive regard means that someone is loved and accepted regardless of what they do or whether they make mistakes. A child is loved even if they are sometimes naughty, do not listen, or behave in some other disapproving way.

Conditions of worth can explain several psychological issues such as low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness.
Conditions of worth are something that parents can impose on their children; they have to behave in a specific manner or meet conditions to receive their parents’ love and acceptance.
Carl Rogers said we have the real self and the ideal self. The real self is our self-image, how we view ourselves to be. The ideal self represents how we want to be. If our real and ideal self match, then congruence is achieved.
When our real self and ideal self match, congruence is achieved.
